Years 1/2

Welcome To Years 1/2 - Blue, Orange and Yellow Classes

Welcome to Key Stage 1! Our KS1 provision is designed to give children in Years 1 and 2 a wonderful start to their primary school journey. Here, learning is fun, engaging, and tailored to each child’s needs.

We have three mixed-year group classes—Blue, Orange, and Yellow—which allow children to learn from and alongside peers of different ages, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Our nurturing staff work closely with each child, ensuring they feel confident, supported, and excited to explore new ideas.

In KS1, children build on the foundations of early learning, developing essential skills in reading, writing, maths, and the wider curriculum. But learning isn’t just about books—our children enjoy a variety of hands-on activities, creative projects, and opportunities to grow socially and emotionally.

We pride ourselves on creating a warm, welcoming environment where every child is valued, encouraged, and inspired to reach their full potential. With the guidance of our dedicated team, KS1 at our school is a place where curiosity is celebrated, friendships flourish, and children develop a lifelong love of learning.

Curriculum Intent

At Edgewood Primary School, we have designed a broad and balanced curriculum aimed at creating the best conditions to allow children to grow and develop into confident successful learners, who want to go on to make a positive contribution to society.

As well as achieving academic success through acquiring knowledge and skills, we want our children to become ambitious, inquisitive and resilient as these are behaviours that will serve them well in the next stage of their education and throughout their lives.

Our curriculum also looks to support our children’s social, moral, spiritual and cultural development so that they are well prepared for modern life.

Our school vision and values are at the core of how we deliver our curriculum so that all children learn to become Respectful, Ambitious, Proud and Safe.

Admissions

If you are new to the area and wish to enrol your child into years 1 or 2 at our school, you will need to make an application for a school place online via the Nottinghamshire County Council admissions portal. They will be able to process your application and confirm if we have space in the required year group.

You can of course take your time to read through our statutory information and school policies while you are waiting for your application to process.

We are also more than happy for you to make an appointment to take a look around our school so that we can show you what Edgewood has to offer. Please contact our office for more details.

Helping Your Child

To help support your child’s learning we regularly set your child homework. If you make the time every day to help your child with some of the following things, it will make a real difference to your child’s confidence as a young learner.

Each week your child will bring home a set of spellings to learn that are linked to what they are learning in their phonics sessions. The children can also practice these using the Spelling Shed website and their login details.

In addition, we ask that you read with your child at least four times a week, to help them consolidate the reading skills we are teaching in school.

Maths homework can be accessed via the Maths Shed website, using your child’s login details.
