Years 5/6

Welcome To Years 5/6 - Azul, Morado and Rojo Classes

Welcome to Year 5-6. As the children enter the final two years of their primary education, we look to help them build on the core skills they have developed during their time with us while promoting the sort of independence that will enable them to thrive when they move on to secondary school.

Our three classes – Azul, Morado and Rojo- follow a mixed-age curriculum which is designed to encourage overlearning. The skills and key knowledge that are learnt in Year 5 are repeated the following year, ensuring that the children consolidate their understanding and develop a greater depth to their learning.

As well as focusing on academic skills, we also look to support the children to grow into well-rounded young people who will go on to make a positive contribution to society. At the heart of everything we do are our school values of being respectful, ambitious, proud and safe.

Our partnership with Nottingham Trent University, creates opportunities to raise aspirations and we also work closely with local secondary schools to ensure that the transition to Key Stage 3 is as smooth as possible.

Curriculum Intent

At Edgewood Primary School, we have designed a broad and balanced curriculum aimed at creating the best conditions to allow children to grow and develop into confident successful learners, who want to go on to make a positive contribution to society.

As well as achieving academic success through acquiring knowledge and skills, we want our children to become ambitious, inquisitive and resilient as these are behaviours that will serve them well in the next stage of their education and throughout their lives.

Our curriculum also looks to support our children’s social, moral, spiritual and cultural development so that they are well prepared for modern life.

Our school vision and values are at the core of how we deliver our curriculum so that all children learn to become Respectful, Ambitious, Proud and Safe.

Admissions

If you are new to the area and wish to enrol your child into years 5 or 6 at our school, you will need to make an application for a school place online via the Nottinghamshire County Council admissions portal. They will be able to process your application and confirm if we have space in the required year group.

You can of course take your time to read through our statutory information and school policies while you are waiting for your application to process.

We are also more than happy for you to make an appointment to take a look around our school so that we can show you what Edgewood has to offer. Please contact our office for more details.

Helping Your Child

To help support your child’s learning we regularly set your child homework. If you make the time every day to help your child with some of the following things, it will make a real difference to your child’s confidence as a young learner.

Every week, the children will complete a times table test in the classroom. On Maths Shed, they will be assigned the times table they are focusing on for their weekly test. They should complete 5 games on the Maths Shed website.

The children will complete a Multiplication Tables Check. They can practice and prepare for the test via this link.

Reading

Every child has an online account on the Learning With Parents websiteEach child should aim to read at least four times a week.

Spellings

Children will complete a weekly spelling test. The spellings will be assigned every Friday and they should complete 5 games on the Spelling Shed website.
